Cutting Torch
How to: Use A Cutting Torch
A Brief Overview of What Cutting Plasma is All About?
Cutting plasma is a process that is used by several manufacturing or automobile industries in order to cut steel and other metal products through plasma torch. The process of cutting plasma make use of an inert gas which is blown out of a nozzle at a high speed. At the same time an electrical arc is formed that goes through the nozzle to the surface that is being cut, turning the part of the gas into plasma.
Plasma is a very hot metal that can easily be cut and it quickly blows the metal that has melted away from the cut that is made. In fact, it is also used for the plasma arc welding process. Several methods are there in which this process works depending on the machine that is used. Described below are two different types that are used for cutting plasma. They are as follows:
1. Pilot Arc – This system uses two cycles in order to produce plasma. At first, they use a high voltage, low current circuit that starts up with a small spark having high intensity. This whole process begins inside the torch and generates a small part of plasma gas called pilot arc. Also, an electrical path return is already built into the head of the torch.
2. HF Contact – You can find HF contact in certain low budget models of machines. This uses a high voltage spark and a high frequency to ionize the air. It goes through the torch head to form an arc when the torch comes in contact with the material to be cut. Also, note that these machines do not cut any of the CNC applications.
You can use plasma to cut thin and thick materials effectively; in fact a hand held torch can often be used to cut certain materials. All you need to do is consider the process carefully as these need to be cut with very close precision.
Earlier, plasma cutters were used to work on the materials that could conduct electricity, but today, one can easily use it on any type of metals. The new technological innovations has made plasma cutters better in many aspects and this has created the ability for the cutting plasma to cut almost as well as a laser.
