Maintenance of hot tubs and spas in cold situations
An important part of maintaining a spa, hot tub, swim spas or swimming pool includes preparing it for those months when you may not be using it. It is believed that pools should be shut when the temperatures at night hit the 40s. If you close it too early, you will risk the possibility of algae overgrowth. It is essential not to wait till the trees shed their leaves or else it creates more work.
It is often thought necessary to winterize the plumbing, equipment and pool structure before any of these components freeze. The APSP advise pool owners to thoroughly inspect the pool or spa structure and the equipment to ensure everything is in working order. If something needs to be repaired, you should do it before closing your pool for the season and ideally before the freezing weather sets in.
It is best to vacuum your pool or spa and also vacuum wastewater to the appropriate location. If your filter does not have a “waste” indicator, vacuum on the “filter” position only. Using a pump will help dispose of the waste.
It is recommended to carry out this water treatment in the winter so that the water does not become corrosive when the temperature drops to the freezing point or below. The chemicals you add for winter needs to be done before draining or placing the cover on. It is advisable to check the instructions that come with your chemicals or cover.
After closing the valve on the skimmer line, you should then lower the water level to about 18 inches below the pool’s coping. The level you lower the pool will depend on the size.It is advised to check the manual for your pool from the manufacturers website.
Be sure to drain the water and blow water out of all piping. An air compressor will help to blow water out of circulation lines. The heater and filter must be drained from water. Make sure to add the nontoxic antifreeze when winterizing. It is obtainable at most hot tub shops. The chemical mix will help protect the pool from freezing over.
Drain valves thoroughly, making sure that any below water level are securely sealed. It is essential to use an electric heat tape for lines below the water level that could be exposed to freezing.
Lights that have less than 18 inches of water above them are best removed. Wrapping plastic round the spa will help protect it.
Drain the pump by removing the plugs and with the help of a wet/dry vac remove all the water from the pump housing and strainer compartment. Add antifreeze to the pump housing without removing the drain plugs. The drain hole threads need to be lubricated to stop corrosion.
All filters should be completely drained and drain plugs left out and again apply a lubricant to the threads.
Finally the cover. Securing it tightly will keep out any unwanted materials into the pool!

Frequently Asked Questions...
when installing central heat and air, why do they put the cold air return in the cealing ?
heat rises, not cold air, so you would be sucking all the heat out through the cold air return.? right.
Answer:
Last year we had some problems with our AC. The tech came out to fix it and I asked him that same question. He showed me how to position the vents for maximum circulation.
You're supposed to aim the vents across the ceiling toward the outside wall. This creates a downward draft that makes the cool air travel down the outside wall. It drags the hot air with it. It also cool off the walls and that helps make the whole house cooler.
The return in the ceiling is not usually around any vents. So the idea is that the air travels in a circular pattern across the ceiling down the wall and across the floor into the low pressure area where the return is pulling the air in to continue the cycle.
It works.
This year our electric bill is about $150.00 lower than last year at this same time. We live in Florida. Its freakin' hot out there! So this is a really nice benefit.
Good luck.
