Torque Wrench
Proper Selection of Torque Wrenches for Coaxial Connectors
Some coaxial connectors require torque wrenches, some do not, & some have different torque requirements depending upon the material of the connector. This article will try to address this sometimes confusing issue.
It's always best to look up the manufacturer's specifications as to the proper torque for a connector. However one often is hooking up equipment without knowing connector source, so some general guidelines can be applied.
N's and TNC's work properly with finger tightening. However there are precision N's and TNC's which work to 18ghz, & it's best to torque these to 13 inlbs. Note that there is no standard hex nut size for type N's, be sure to get one that fits.
7mm connectors, commonly used in test equipment, should have a torque of 12 in-lbs. 2.4, 2.92, & 3.5mm connectors should be tightened to 9 in-lbs.
SMA's are the most challenging connectors to torque properly. Brass SMA manufacturers call out values of 3-6 in-lbs. Stainless steel sma specs vary between 7.5-10 in-lbs. Use a 10 in-lb wrench on a brass SMA and the nut will come off! Some Military specs forbid tightening over 8 in-lbs. Agilient, one of the most respected manufacturers in our industry, uses lower levels than most, recommending 5 in-lbs for SMA's. Huber Suhner, another well know manufacturer, sells tools with a torque of up to 9.6 in-lbs for their sma's. May the buyer beware!
SMC connectors come with up to 4 head sizes, so one might consider a single wrench with multiple heads. 3 in-lbs is the nominal value for smc's.
Typical torque wrenches can be found here; sma torque wrenches and 7mm torque wrenches
