Three Easy Steps to Choosing The Right Set of Fire Hose Reels and Accessories
The UK government is aware of the fact that fires can occur at any time and at any location. In recognition of this fact, it has implemented the Regulatory Reform or the Fire Safety Order 2005 which encompasses virtually covers almost all types of buildings, structure, and open spaces such as shops and offices; premises providing care; community halls; pubs, clubs and restaurants; schools; as well as hotels and hostels, to name just a few.
Part of an excellent fire safety scheme is being able to provide adequate water supply to any location inside each of the premises. In cases when a fire blanket or fire extinguisher is unable to put out a fire, then adequate supply of water must be available. To be able to transport it effectively, then the right set of fire hose reels and accessories must be available. Here is a three-step guide to help you choose the right set of equipment:
Step 1. Know the Regulations Currently Being Imposed
In the UK, the British Standards Institution or the BSI Group imposes a set of regulations covering fire safety equipment. With regards to fire hoses and accessories, the current standards being imposed are the BS 336 for fire hose couplings and ancillary equipment, which covers everything from fire hoses, hose connectors, suction hoses, fire nozzles, delivery pipes, pipe connections and fittings, as well as pipe junctions, among others. There is also a corresponding standard, called the BS 6391:2009, which specifies requirements for non-percolating layflat delivery hoses and hose assemblies for fire fighting purposes. Specifically, the BS 6391 applies to fires hoses meant to be used at no more than 15 bar of working pressure and a minimum temperature of −20 °C. You would know that the product you are considering to purchase has passed tests and is in conformance with BS 336 if it bears the Kitemark seal awarded to products tested by the BSI group.
Step 2. Identify the Types of Equipment and Accessories Available
Certainly, choosing requires that you consider a wide range of products currently being sold in the market today. The type 2 fire hose is already sold with a set of wired-on alloy couplings and can be bought in 23-metre or 18-metre lengths. On the other hand, the heavy duty fire hose type 3 is meant for more industrial facilities such as airports, warehouses, and the like. While the type 2 is outer-coated and can be used for smaller areas, the type 3 fire hose comes completely encased in rubber nitrile which facilitates easier flow rates—perfect for industrial use. In terms of accessories,
alloy couplings made of either gunmetal or plastic, diffuser branchpipe nozzles, as well as leather straps and padlocks.
Step 3. Consult a Fire Safety Expert
Because fire safety and protection is an important aspect of maintaining a business, there is also a need to consult fire safety experts with regards to proper installation, storage, usage, and handling. With the right set of information, you will be ensured that your decision will be a sound one.

We bought a brand new hose reel. We put an old hose on it and it leaked between the female end AND THE HOSE,?
so we bought a new hose and it has the same problem! It is not the hose gasket, since it is not leaking from that area, but from the connection of the hose end and the hose itself. Both the old hose and the new one leak the same way when attached to this hose reel.

If it is a gasket problem the joint between the hose and the swiveling female nut is exactly where it will leak. For some reason the nut isn't threading far enough onto the male end. Look for a rough spot on the male end on the hose reel that is preventing the gasket from seating or on the threads for a bad spot that is keeping the female nut from screwing far enough. Try doubling the gaskets if you don't find anything obvious. Teflon tape will seal the threads only.
