ELECTRIC SUPER CHARGERS - What is it?
Introduction:
Nowadays people are finding different ways to acquire more power from their automobile engines. There are number of technologies are available to modify the engine to get more power that includes also Superchargers and Electrical Superchargers & Turbos. These superchargers are available readily in market that increases your car engine overall horsepower. Results in increased horsepower you can get better overall speed and better acceleration.
Superchargers:
Actually a supercharger is an air compressor that used in internal combustion engine for forced induction. It provides high mass flow rate that in turn offers more oxygen to assist the combustion. So, more fuel will be burned and high work will be done per cycle, finally you will get increased power output of the engine.
Power to the superchargers can be given in two ways:
1. Electrically
2. Mechanically (through belt, gear, shaft, or chain)
Electric Supercharger:
An Electrical supercharger is a precise type of superchargers. It uses electricity as the power input. It uses forced air system which is electrically powered that includes an electric motor, used to run an axial flow fan to make the intake air pressurized. This Electric supercharger is specially designed to function only at the stage of full throttle of butterfly valve. The air required for engine intake is made pressurized by this electric supercharger and the air made denser. This pressurized air is fed as input to the system which in turn increases the horsepower of the engine.
Electric superchargers Vs Mechanical superchargers:
Generally electric superchargers are less expensive than Mechanical belt-driven superchargers. The increased in horsepower is comparatively less in the case of electrical superchargers. However mechanical superchargers will consume some amount of power produced by the engine where, electric superchargers are power by external means.
Power supply to the Electrical superchargers:
The power to the electric supercharger is supplied by the series of stock common electrical accumulators which runs independent of the vehicle engine. However, this type of superchargers will consume more power in the range of 100A e.g. 10 KW. Larger alternators are fixed to recharge electrical accumulators, the circuit recommended from serial to parallel circuit.
Efficiency of Electrical Supercharger:
The electric super chargers efficiency is restricted by numerous energy conversion losses. The losses include electrical alternator for charging, damp energy during electrical accumulator charging and boost provided to electrical compressor. These losses are generally higher than kinematic linkage of incoming air compressor to crankshaft of the engine.
Advantages of Electrical supercharger:
- The main advantage of Electrical supercharger compared to traditional mechanical supercharger is it is easy to install since there is no moving or heavy parts.
- It is quite compact compared to other types.
- It is cheaper than anything.
- It is simply get attached to the existing intake air system of engine and a power cable is fond of to the engine.
- Since mechanical superchargers providing more power than this electrical charger it is up to 8.5% higher power, it is not much deal.
Summary:
Electric Supercharger and Turbos are one of the greatest ways to increase the power of the car engine. By providing more air flow into the combustion chamber of the engine that creates more explosion and complete burning of the fuel takes place. This in turn increases horsepower of the engine that makes the vehicle more powerful.
